Growth

• put bacteria in flask, watch growth

• initial no bacteria, then exponential growth, plateau, loss

• no growth. May be growing in size but not dividing

• exponential, log

• antibiotics greatest effect

• dying from not enough nutrients

• death = growth

Gene Transfer

Transformation

• DNA in environment or lab experiment

• micro labs: genes in culture media for replication

Conjugation

• DNAase degrade DNA freely in culture

• incorporate plasmids in DNA

• can transfer entire genome or partial genome to another bacteria without plasmid

• plasmid transferred and drags portion of bacteria with it

Transduction

Generalized

• DNA potentially incorporated

Specialized

• viral DNA live in bacterial genome for a while

Lytic

• lytic: generalized transduction, lyses bacteria infected

• lysogenic: may later become lytic or just live inside bacteria

• jumping genes
