03 Meiosis

• meiosis very drawn out in female = prone to error

• 1 set w/ no chromosomes

• 2nd set w/ 2 chromosomes, 2n, not 1n, 1 copy from father, 1 copy from mother, different from Meiosis 2

• no mixture genes. Only from either mom or dad

• advanced age, longer through meiosis

• ACD: error in mother. CD homologous nondisjunction

• rare

• abnormal gametes from both male and female

• usually normal, unless recessive disease

• acrocentric: centromeres near end, short arm

• long arms link up, both short arms lost

• usually not big deal, lost genes only little, but can give 14:21 to offspring

• father: always normal chromosome

• mother: many possibilities

• mother donate normal: normal

• mother donate 14:21: carrier

• monosomy and trisomy 14 not viable

• many failed pregnancies and spontaneous abortion
